Why Aviation Security Trust Framework Matters
The Aviation Security Trust Framework (ASTF) addresses new regulations requiring commercial aircraft operators to create and maintain Aircraft Operator Security Programmes (AOSPs) and Supplementary Station Procedures (SSPs). Developed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
The ASTF leverages decentralized trust standards—like Verifiable Credentials and Digital Wallets—to streamline compliance, protect sensitive data, and unify disparate requirements across multiple jurisdictions. By issuing cryptographically verifiable approvals that can be verified without direct system integration, stakeholders can ensure document integrity during oversight activities while reducing risk and paperwork.

Standardization & Interoperability
Establishing clear, unified digital standards for attestation, allowing verifiable approvals to be instantly verified and trusted across organizational and national jurisdictions.
Cryptographic verifiability and Security
Guaranteeing that approvals are genuine, unaltered, and verifiably linked to the specific document version they approve.
Digital Autonomy
Offering stakeholders a path toward a coordinated digital future without compromising the autonomy and control of their existing systems and processes.
The demonstrator showcases the core functionality using use cases defined by ICAO Annex 17, including the Aircraft Operator Security Program (AOSP) and Supplementary Station Procedures (SSP) documents to be attested.
Upload a security document like an AOSP and SSP and instantly receive a letter of approval with a verifiable tamper-proof QR attestation.
Upload the original document and the letter of approval attestation to instantly confirm the letter of approval authenticity bound to the original document.

Build on decentralized Open standards
To ensure global interoperability and security, the ASTF initiative is built upon open standards.
This approach guarantees interoperability, allowing aviation partners to build trust and securely verify document approvals across all organizations and national borders, while also avoiding proprietary vendor-locking solutions.
ICAO is a standards making body for which the States we will engage towards implementing standards
Verifiable Credentials (VCs)
Think of a VC as a tamper-proof digital seal of approval. We use it to turn a document's status (like CAA Approval) into portable, machine-readable proof that can instantly be checked for authenticity.
DID
Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs)
DIDs are globally unique digital addresses for issuers (like a CAA). They allow anyone, anywhere, to independently look up the issuer's public key from a neutral source to confirm the attestation is genuine. This enables trust decentralization without relying on a single entity.
ANCHORED IN NEUTRAL TRUST
The Swiss Public Beta Infrastructure (swiyu)
The ASTF demonstrator is anchored in the Swiss Public Beta Infrastructure (swiyu), leveraging its open standards and neutrality to build a scalable and secure trust model.
This integration showcases how a state-operated, neutral trust layer, built on principles of decentralized standards, can underpin a critical industry application like aviation security.

Anchor Public Keys
Securely register the cryptographic public keys (thanks to DIDs standards to verify all ASTF attestations, ensuring every signature is validated against a genuine key from a trusted, independent source.
Manage Status and Revocation
Utilize Status Lists to test the real-time validity of an attestation.
Maintain Trusted List
Offer a trust registry for all participating Attestation Service entities (like a Civil Aviation Authority), ensuring that only recognized and validated organizations can issue approvals within the framework.
ASTF PORTAL
The Full Managed Service
We have developed a demonstrator portal showcasing the complete, stateful service, including the full document lifecycle: submission, CAA review, initial attestation, and version superseding.

THE ASTF IS FUTURE-PROOF
The Natural Progression to Digital Wallets
The current public demonstrator proves the core cryptographic principle, the verifiable approval as a Bearer Token embedded in a QR code. This low-tech approach simplifies instant verification of an attestation, and provides an easy transition for stakeholders to adopt ASTF.
The natural evolution of the ASTF lies in adopting a full Digital Wallet Infrastructure. This transition will unlock significant security and operational benefits for both Aircraft Operators and CAAs/NSAs.

Organizational Identity & Authorization
Wallets shift the focus from verifying just the document to securely verifying the holder's identity and their authorization (e.g., confirming the presenter is an approved security officer for the airline).
Advanced Security & Privacy
Wallets enable features like selective disclosure (sharing only necessary claims from the VC) and leverage device security.
Global Alignment
This evolution aligns the ASTF with major global initiatives, such as the EU Digital Identity Wallet or Swiss e-id amongst others, positioning the framework at the forefront of digital trust initiatives.
